When I was little I was taught piano using the Suzuki method. It basically means you start leaning songs by listening to them while reading music is introduced much later.
Anyway I never thought much about it until today.
Being at my parents house, and thus in close proximity to a piano I felt the urge to sit down and hack at some old songs. So I pulled out the sheet music and laboriously plinked out the notes. Utter failure. I was so lost, it didn't even sound right. But for some reason, my left hand just knew what was going on even if my brain didn't. Turns out your muscles have an astounding memory, and my left hand is at the top of his class (you'd think it'd be my right). But after letting my left hand play I could remember what the right hand sounded like - Peach! My right had no memory of the song, but did well sounding it out. I was surprised how much I could play.
